Weekly Roundup: August 23rd
Featuring Every Time I Die, Anxious, Magdalena Bay, and more.
MOSH PITHY:
A curated selection of cool shit for you to listen to.
Magdalena Bay – “Secrets (Your Fire)”
L.A. electro-pop duo Magdalena Bay are coming through with a slick, retro sound and aesthetic on their debut full-length album, Mercurial World (out October 8th via Luminelle). The record’s second single, “Secrets (Your Fire),” is a glitzy bop about “interconnectivity, privacy, and digital anxiety,” that finds the duo channelling a super relatable, millennial affect of “madness in containment.” Watch the very online video for “Secrets (Your Fire)” below:
The Rebel Riot – One Day
No, this isn’t a new Green Day record. Don’t let that super-commodified anarchy symbol of Punk™ fool you. The Rebel Riot are a legit punk band from Yangon, Myanmar, formed in 2007 after the onset of the Saffron Revolution. These guys are the real deal, using their sincere punk sound to spread a message of freedom against systems of political and military oppression. And with song titles like “FOOD NOT BOMBS,” “PUNK AGAINST SWEATSHOPS” and “MY BUDDHA IS PUNK,” their latest album One Day should be something that any self-described punk can get behind. Stream the LP here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Anxious – “Call From You”
Connecticut outfit Anxious have roots in East Coast hardcore but their sound swings much closer to melodic emo and pop-punk—a connection that makes a lot of sense given that vocalist Grady Allen also plays guitar in Wilkes-Barre up-and-comers One Step Closer. Produced by TWIABP&INLWTD’s Chris Teti, the latest single from these recent Run for Cover Records signees is a bright and bouncy guitar-driven track with a smooth hook and layers of dreamy reverb. Listen to “Call From You” here.
Creeping Death – The Edge of Existence
Man, I know they say “Don’t mess with Texas” but when it comes to thrashing metal outfits, they really mean it. Creeping Death are another Texan outfit on a marked upward trend, hailing from the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area via Denton. Produced and mixed by Ryan Bram (Gatecreeper, Bitter Rivals, Sex Prisoner), their latest six-track EP, The Edge of Existence (out October 8th through eOne Heavy), further solidifies their power and pedigree with stomping rhythms, frenzied riffage and hellraiser vocals. Stream the EP’s title track here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Rolo Tomassi – “Cloaked”
UK post-hardcore outfit Rolo Tomassi are finally back on the scene, armed with a new single and a new label. Following 2018’s exceptional Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It, the group’s latest banger “Cloaked” teases the sound of their forthcoming album for eOne Heavy. Expect lush siren choruses, progressive instrumentals and brief flashes of white-hot, sonic extremity. Listen to “Cloaked” here.
Chain Cult – We’re Not Alone
Athens post-punkers Chain Cult keep things fresh and emotionally charged on their latest 7-inch, We’re Not Alone. The Greek trio unfurl ominous melodies and powerful rhythms on the release’s title track, while back-end cut “Always A Mess” pairs lyrical reflections with catchy, ear-worm refrains. Stream the 7-inch here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Every Time I Die – “Post-Boredom”
Thank god! It’s finally here, the long-awaited follow up to 2016’s Low Teens from Buffalo’s finest. Every Time I Die will release their ninth LP, Radical, on October 22 via Epitaph, and if their latest single “Post-Boredom” is any indication, this is going to be the band’s most fully realised effort yet. Following four years of Trumpism and his separation from his partner of over a decade, vocalist Keith Buckley says that Radical is an album steeped in “difficult matters” that are also “universal and more communal experiences”. Watch the hilarious clip for “Post-Boredom” below:
Slow Crush – Hush
Belgium-based shoegazers Slow Crush have announced the release of their sophomore album, Hush, (out October 22nd via Church Road Records). Acting as the follow-up to their debut LP, Aurora, the new full-length was “written in between tours, unexpected downtime during a pandemic and turbulent times.” With vocalist Isa Holliday’s ethereal vocals guiding the way through dense layers of sublime guitar and swirling noise, Hush promises to deliver everything dedicated shoegaze fans could ask for. Stream the LP’s singles here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
