MOSH PITHY:
A curated selection of cool shit for you to listen to.
Don Broco – “Fingernails”
Eclectic UK rockers Don Broco are already back on the block with a brand new shiny single. Fresh off the release of their fourth LP, 2021’s Amazing Things, “Fingernails” incorporates the quartet’s knack for catchy call-and-response refrains along with their dizzying fusion of electro, rock, pop, metal, and anything else they feel like throwing in the mix. It’s another sure-fire festival banger and more of the same from the Bedford unit, but it’s never dull or uninteresting. Watch the video for “Fingernails” below:
Terror – Pain Into Power
If you had to come up with contemporary hardcore bands that were still swinging harder than ever after multiple decades in the game, Terror would likely be the first and only name to cross your mind. The L.A. vets are gearing up to release their eighth full-length album, Pain Into Power (out May 6th through Pure Noise Records), and this record also marks the return of founding guitarist Todd Jones (Nails). The Silver Lines – “Love Made”
Regardless of your thoughts on traditional ‘indie’ music, there’s something refreshingly honest and forthright about calling your latest project Sleaze. On their latest five-track EP (due on May 26th through Ravo Records), Birmingham quartet The Silver Lines aim to drag the listener into the seedy underbelly of the mind. Recent single “Love Made” sports a stalking bassline and lysergic guitars, perfect for conjuring intoxicating images of long nights, strung out D&M’s, and guilty inhibitions. Listen to “Love Made” here.
Fallujah – Empyrean
Tech death mainstays Fallujah are roaring back into the fold with the forthcoming release of their long-awaited fifth LP, Empyrean (out September 9th from Nuclear Blast). Determined to explore new sonic realms outside of purely punishing blast-beats and multi-layered fret frenzy, their latest album features an overhauled lineup that includes primary songwriter/guitarist Scott Carstairs and compeer/drummer Andrew Baird, alongside newly added vocalist Kyle Schaefer (Archaeologist) and bassist Evan Brewer (formerly Entheos/The Faceless). Stream the LP’s pre-release singles here (Spotify).
Simulkara – “Fading Away”
It only takes one listen to The Infection Spreads (out May 24th via DAZE) to know that Simulkara aren't here to fuck around. The Delaware stompers bring an aggressive and uncompromising vision to their slate of pissed-off metallic hardcore compositions, aiming at everything from death and disease (yep, relevant) to government overreach and the unlawfully long arm of the law (also relevant). Plus, with members already doing time in bands like Foreign Hands, Vicious Embrace, and Gridiron, to name just a few, you know the quintet have the collective skills to back their shit up. Listen to “Fading Away” here.
Puppy – Pure Evil
Speaking on the upcoming release of their new album, Pure Evil (out May 6th through Rude Records), UK grunge trio Puppy have articulated their collective mission statement: “To reach into every corner of our musical interests and put together something that felt free and fun.” So, what’s the result? Riffs, more riffs, and then also riffs. If you ever had a hard-on for Torche, Red Fang, and other bands of that super-fun, fuzzed-out ilk, then this should be right up your alley. Stream the LP’s pre-release singles here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Cave In – “Blood Spiller”
Ever since the announcement of their highly anticipated return, I've been increasingly excited to dive into a brand new Cave In record. Heavy Pendulum (out May 20th) is the Boston quartet’s Relapse Records debut and their first full studio record in over a decade. Vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky detailed the album’s genesis thusly: “If you laid out the timeline for 2020 like a recipe, it might look something like this: global pandemic + lockdowns + worldwide protests over the wrongful death of George Floyd + election year = cocktail for end times. Somewhere in that concoction, we found ingredients for a new Cave In album.” Get ripped on “the horrors within” the video for the album’s latest single, “Blood Spiller,” below:
Docile Bodies – Sculptures in Motion
One of the perks of doing a job like this is getting cool stuff regularly dropped in your inbox. With a welcome shoutout from some good folks around à La Carte Records, I came across Tilburg post-punk outfit Docile Bodies this week. Sculptures in Motion (out May 6th) represents a complete body of work from the Dutch quartet, compiling their recent Arc EP, “Decadence” and “Only This” singles, along with their Live at Effenaar performance set. It’s a robust collection and the perfect primer for getting on board with the group’s cinematic approach to whirling, heady soundscapes.
