Trophy Eyes – “27 Club”
Following the release of “Figure Eight” earlier this year, Aussie alt-rockers Trophy Eyes are back with a new banger from their as-yet to be announced fourth album. “27 Club” finds frontman John Floreani crooning about death, imposter syndrome, and self-loathing through a soaring lead vocal, as the band came together for a powerful and anthemic instrumental finisher. Watch the track’s visualiser below:
Burn Alive – Exercise Your Right To Die
Burn Alive have dropped their newest EP, Exercise Your Right To Die, through The Coming Strife, and it makes their blistering metallic hardcore more confrontational than ever before. Everything here is a step up for the London bruisers with a heavy blitz of chaotic time changes, angular riffage, sinister rhythms, and super-charged, antagonistic vocals. Stream the full EP here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Maybeshewill – “Zarah”
2014’s Fair Youth is one of my most treasured post-rock albums and I’ve been mourning the lack of Maybeshewill ever since their hiatus shortly after that album’s release. However, in welcome news for a dire year, the Leicester quintet are finally back with a new LP, No Feeling is Final, out November 19th via Robot Needs Home/Bird’s Robe. It’s a record “born from a place of weary exasperation. From the knowledge that we’re living in a world hurtling towards self-destruction.” Grim stuff. Listen to the LP’s lead single “Zarah” here.
200 Stab Wounds – Slave to the Scalpel
Slave to the Scalpel, out November 12th through Maggot Stomp, truly is “caveman shit for neanderthals.” On their debut LP, Ohio’s 200 Stab Wounds serve up a glorious slab of horror-infused, brutal death metal in the vein of genre legends like Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus, packed with bile-laden references to murderous tendencies, cannibalism, and prolific serial killers. It’s not for the squeamish but it does make for some filthy headbang material. Stream the LP’s pre-release singles here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Grivo – “Trammel”
Church Road Records have been having a cracker year for expanding their roster and the release of Omit, the forthcoming sophomore record from Austin shoegazers Grivo (out January 28th) is sure to continue that absolutely stellar run well into 2022. Album opener “Trammel” is immense and weighty, bursting with melodic precision and layers of sonic grit and texture. Fans of Nothing, True Widow, and Church Road’s own Slow Crush should definitely take notice. Listen to “Trammel” here.
Green Lung – Black Harvest
I enjoyed the shit out of 2019’s Woodland Rites, so when I saw that British heavy metallers Green Lung had already dropped their follow-up LP, I jumped on it immediately. Black Harvest is ten tracks of sprawling and grandiose ‘70s doom done right: Scott Black’s quicksilver licks and rumbling fuzz, pounding rhythms from Joseph Ghast and Matt Wiseman, the warbling tones of John Wright’s organ, and the lofty heights of vocalist Tom Templar’s Sabbathian register. It all works together beautifully and it’s fun as hell. Stream the full release here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Anxious – “In April”
I covered Connecticut’s Anxious for this newsletter back in August and now the band has announced the release of their long-awaited debut LP, Little Green House, out January 21 via Run For Cover Records. There’s a fair bit of scene cross-pollination going on here, too. The band share’s two members with melodic hardcore outfit One Step Closer, Little Green House was recorded and produced by TWIABP’s Chris Teti, and the album also features guest vocals from Pat Flynn of Fiddlehead/Have Heart. Watch the breezy video for “In April” below:
Toy – QP9
I wrote a feature for Bandcamp back in August on the new breed of Australian hardcore and one of my most painful omissions in that list was Brisbane/Sunshine Coast outfit Toy. Thankfully, the good folks at Last Ride Records have come through with QP9, the band’s scorching new 7-inch, and it’s sure to turn plenty of heads. This thing is seven songs of straight savagery, serving up a feral blend of caustic hardcore punk punctuated by buzzsaw riffs, fight breaks, gnarly samples, and assorted mosh moments. Stream the LP here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
