MOSH PITHY:
A curated selection of cool shit for you to listen to.
SION – “Drown”
Two years in the making and entirely self-funded, the debut self-titled album from SION—the collaborative metalcore project from Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage, Light The Torch) and YouTube guitar sensation Jared Dines—is finally here. With catchy licks and soaring melodies powered by Jones’ indomitable pipes, the twelve-track LP brings a slick modern sound to the duo’s nostalgic mid-2000s songwriting. Watch the video for “Drown” below:
Krzta – ŻÓŁĆ.NISZCZENIE.ZGLISZCZE
Prior to listening to ŻÓŁĆ.NISZCZENIE.ZGLISZCZE (which translates to YELLOW. DESTRUCTION. DECAYS.), I knew next to nothing about Krzta apart from what their fans on Bandcamp were telling people. I still stand by my innate ability to discern a good record based purely on eye-catching artwork, and illustrator Kamil Błażewicz absolutely came through with the goods here. On this seven-track behemoth, the Polish trio dish out aggressive and serpentine post-metal that’s packed full of angular riffage and corrosive textures. Stream the LP in full here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Dear Seattle – “Way Out”
On “Way Out,” Dear Seattle frontman Brae Fisher appears to be working through some shit. The alt-rock tune starts off soft and melancholic before gradually picking up momentum towards a powerful finish, as Fisher explores resentment and codependency in his relationships. It’s also the second single from Dear Seattle’s as-yet-untitled second album due out in 2022, following 2019’s well-received Don’t Let Go and previous single “In My Head.” Listen to “Way Out” here.
The Chain – S/T
Featuring members of Miles Away, Flowermouth and The Others, Perth bruisers The Chain are already a well-established force within Australian hardcore. The band’s new self-titled 7-inch EP, out December 3rd through Last Ride Records, is a savage collection of hardcore punk ragers with plenty of attitude and spite to spare. Stream the EP’s blistering singles here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
King Buffalo – “Shadows”
After dropping The Burden of Restlessness LP earlier this year, Rochester trio King Buffalo are back with another new record and one hell of a premise. Acheron, the band’s latest four-track album, out December 3rd, was recorded live in one-take at Howe Caverns in Schoharie County, New York, adding an immersive, spacious and literally cavernous dimension to the band’s already lofty psych metal sound. Listen to the monolithic, ten-minute single “Shadows” here.
Stormkeep – Tales of Othertime
Look, I’m by no means a purist or an elitist or any other kind of ‘-ist’ when it comes to black metal. So, the weirder and more palatable the tried and trve template of ‘Insert Blast Beats and Tremolos Here’ can become, the better. Thankfully, for Metal Twitter favourites Stormkeep, those risks include injecting a heavy dose of thrash rhythms, melo-death riffage, and bombastic symphonic theatricality into their frost-bitten sound design. And with such a tantalizing combo on offer, it’s really no surprise that their Tales of Othertime LP is such a fun and engaging listen. Stream the album in full here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
Between You & Me – “Go To Hell” feat. Yours Truly
Coming through with an Aussie pop-punk team-up for the ages, Melbourne outfit Between You & Me have paired up with Sydney-siders Yours Truly for the melodic anthem “Go To Hell,” taken from their second full-length album Armageddon, out now through Hopeless Records. While ostensibly about climate change and the world spiralling out of control, it’s really the vocal interplay between Jake Wilson and Mikaila Delgado that’s the real selling point here. Watch the video for “Go To Hell” below:
Spaced – Two New Joints
Buffalo hardcore punk outfit Spaced aren’t seeking approval and they're not here to please. On Two New Joints, the band's whirlwind two-track release for the good folks over at New Morality Zine, the New York quintet proudly raise “a middle finger to gatekeepers, sexists, and elitists. This is the new wave of hardcore. Get with it or get out of the way.” Stream both singles here (Bandcamp/Spotify).
